Pyrath’s scaly form sliced lazily through the air. Her attempts at information gathering had been unsuccessful thus far. Not for lack of trying but more for lack of decorum on part of the humans. For a species whose primary habitat was on a land where dragons once ruled and whose magic permeated the Earth, one would think they would be more open minded. Dense air was pushed forcefully from her nostrils as she snorted. Humans? Open minded? There was a greater chance of a kit hatching without its mother. Her thoughts dismissive as she spun effortlessly through clouds, her dragon form twirling and spiraling like a leaf in wind. If her natural form scared the humans so she could not get the information she required on her little sister, she would have to assume a form that would register their senses defenseless. Her pink forked tongue snaked out to wrap around a cloud as she munched. Her mood improving as she decided on her next course of action.
With a stream of her magic, her form suddenly dropped. The speed increasing at a rate that only magic applied could bring. The random dots of trees and landmarks suddenly coming into clarity. The blue in which she had traversed across gained details as waves clashed and choppy water became clear. A deafening crash, water sprayed hundreds of feet across as Pyrath dove into the water. Coming belly up, wings spread wide she snaked her head from left to right as if scratching an itch.
Folding her wings, she flipped over and dove once more beneath the surface of the water. In snakelike movements she headed toward land.
Stretching as her clawed paws dug into the soft ear, she shook her body, water flinging in every direction. Her large reptilian form pushing aside trees as she walked further into the wooded area for coverage. “Alright this should not be so hard. I have come across enough humans now that I should be able to form a correct shape.” Slitted orbs disappeared as her eyelids closed in concentration. It was only a moment before a gust of wind blew from her nostrils and knocked down two trees in frustration. “Who wanted to squish themselves into a smaller form?... Oh right, only my odd ball sister would. To find her I will have to do the same.”
She let her thoughts drift, her magic swirled. The wind picked up around her, rustling all it touched. There was a pressure until suddenly her form changed into that of a two legged. Her eyes opened wide in surprise at her success. That was until she tried to take a step forward and besides her extreme off balance at the new form, she still had her tail. She fell… into her dragon form. The gust of wind magic that accompanied the instant form change into her much larger, natural form knocked down three more trees. This time a semi quiet roar escaped her maw.
Okay. If the little squirt can do this, than I can! With that thought, her eyelids lowered once more. A build up of pressure which suddenly disappeared as it was contained within her now 110 pound figure. Looking down at herself, slitted eyes widened in glee. Yes! Now it was a matter of gaining confidence in this form. Before taking a step forward she looked behind her to make sure her tail was indeed gone. With the step forward, her hands reached to either side as if for balance. "Bah. Stupid form. Meat Popsicles." Using her wind magic, she created 'walking sticks' invisible to the eye as they were just made of solidified air. With the next few steps she used her magic as a type of balancer.
"Hmmm. Seaside humans seem a bit healthier than the ones in big cities..." Tyr mused to herself as she blew some of her long green hair out of her face. She was sitting on a wall near the edge of the city, as she had been for about the last fifteen minutes. She didn't have the ability to stop squirming, but the view of the people going about their day in the marketplace was just too much fun to make her want to get up and find something else to do at the moment. Everywhere she went humans had different habits, different schedules, and different outlooks. These humans liked fish more than the inland humans, which made sense since it was easier for them to get...
Her left hand reached up and pushed the bangs from her face; she hadn't bothered to put it back in its normal form after she'd taken it down out of curiosity earlier, and now her hair was just in a loose ponytail. Her fair legs kicked a bit while she watched, but at this point she was starting to get more restless than a bit of shuffling around would cure. She had more people to visit - weird or not, she was a social creature.
She gathered her strength to shove off away from the wall, but was stopped when a familiar smell entered her nostrils. Even in her human form, her superior dragon senses were still present. "That smells like... Pyrath? It can't be..." she raised an eyebrow, using her wind magic to gracefully hop up to a standing position on top of the wall. The nearby woods was where the smell was coming from. Now she had to check it out.
Tyr hopped from the wall, landing as gently and gracefully as a cat as she ran off towards the woods. She burst through the foliage, immediately spotting some trees that hadn't fallen down before. The trees led her to a much more obvious difference - where the trees once stood was the fair form of a girl that looked surprisingly similar to young Tyr. The female human was the one who smelled like her sister.
There was no hiding the surprise on Tyr's face as she connected the dots in her head. "P-Pyrath? Sister?!" Tyr blinked a couple of times before running forward and tackling her sister with a hug, not particularly caring that the next moment they were on the ground. "Sis! It's you! I'd recognize your smell anywhere!" she took a moment as she sat up a bit (still lying on Pyrath) and looked her sister over as the second realization hit her. "And you have a human form?! Wow so cool! I knew you'd be able to master any magic you wanted. What's up? How've you been? How's Mom? Did you know humans have spoorts where they throw round objects at each other?"
So distracted by her current lack of equilibrium was she that Pyrath’s expression was completely open. Her head snapped up, violet slits going from the ground to look astonished at her sister… Tyr!?! It was indeed the first time she had looked upon the little dragon in her human form. It was so… Tyr. Suddenly she was on the ground, the small but oddly heavy oddball of a sister on top of her. “Oomph.” A not very ladylike noise expelled from her throat as the wind was knocked from her. So much for cat-like reflexes and instincts.
Pyrath blinked slowly as Tyr’s mouth ran a mile a minute. She suddenly sat up, her arms wrapping around the young girl still sitting on her. Despite being new to human form, the reaction was instinct and not so different in dragon form. Though in dragon form, one covered another with wings and tail in a gesture of affection. Or a head rub. In a rare display of affection Pyrath’s cheek pressed against Tyr’s, a quiet rumble/purr emanating from her throat as she exclaimed, “Ah. Squirt I missed you!” She did not realize until that moment how truly worried she was for her younger sister and how increased that worry had become at her own failed interactions with humans. Rather than admit she was worried, she merely said she missed Tyr. One could assume she was as open as she was currently because they were alone and her emotions overwhelmed her in her current form.
Suddenly she let go, her mind letting go of the worry now that she had located her sibling and focused on what Tyr was jabbering about. Her slight embarrassment at the affection she showed turned into annoyance out of habit. She pushed off the ground with her wind magic to roll Tyr over, much like wrestling as they had in dragon forms- wings over tails as they rolled across the ground. “Mom is mom…” Continuing she meant we, as in siblings. “We were worried Tyr. You could have sent word…”
"Squiiirt?" Pyrrha made a face as she was rolled off of her sister, giggling like the young girl she sort of was. "But you guys, I know I'm the youngest but we're dragons. I'm totally fine wandering around, you know" she made a pouty lip she'd learned from the humans. It didn't really translate into anything dragon, but Tyr understood it quite well by now. "I'm even a really good hunter and stuff, thanks to my scent-masking magic."
Tyr was still too close to the city to be comfortable going dragon form; reports of a sky dragon interrupting a festival were still circulating. She ruffled her long green hair, then scooted closer to Pyrath yet again. Her hand reached out and grabbed Pyrath's hair gently, tugging on it not quite enough to hurt and enough to examine, sniffing it like a dragon would instead of the human she was. "You did really well! You're such a cute human girl. Did you model your look off of me? No wait, I've never shown you in person have I?" she giggled. "But anyway, really, I'm fine! I've learned so much about humans. I understand why they like beds so much!"
Pyrath raised an eyebrow, quite expertly for having been in a two legged form for a mere ten minutes, as Tyr pouted at her. “Dragons bigger than even I have been slain before, you knooow.” She copied the ‘you know’ and exaggerated it. Pyrath poked her sister’s middle. “Yea, I can see you have been eating well, Squirt.”
The tug on her hair had her eyes flickering all over Tyr’s face as she reached up to do the same to Tyr’s hair. Pale hands gave her pause, turning her hands back and forth. “There are no claws!” Placing hands in her lap, she wiggled her boots, almost tempted to take them off to see her… feet?. Pyrath had a feeling she would be as dismayed as she was about her hands. “I do not know what I look like. I look like you?” Fingertips went to her face, pressing softly. “I would hope I look fierce rather than… disarming… Maybe it is because we are siblings.” Pyrath almost continued with ‘that our base two legged forms are similar’ but stopped as no form besides dragon should be natural. She actually was not sure how she did what she did. Most dragon magic was like that though. With enough will and imagination and within the parameters of ones element, anything was possible.
“Beds?” She questioned, distracted once more. Shaking her head, Pyrath exclaimed, “No!” Standing, with the help of her wind magic to steady her she tugged on Tyr’s hand to make her stand as well. “Now that I have found you Tyr, you can come back home.”
Pyrath expressed concern that she no longer had claws. "Of course not, silly. Humans have to make weapons. They aren't expert predators like us." Even at birth dragons were generally rather deadly compared to an unarmed human, even if they wouldn't be properly able to control themselves for a day or so in order to make use of said deadliness. She puffed out her cheeks. "Whatchu mean I've been eating well? I eat normal!" she squished with her finger at her belly. It seemed fine to her.
"Anyway yeah, you totally look like me. Except with more belly showing and your hair is a little longer, and.... I think you might actually be a little prettier." Pretty was disarming in a different way than 'cute' - Tyr was starting to learn that based on interactions and watching interactions. "We'd have been the most adorable helpless humans," she giggled to herself, unconcerned for the fact that she was well into what a normal person would consider Pyrath's personal space.
She recoiled a bit when Pyrath said no so forcefully. Tyr was an easygoing (yet extremely passionate) girl, but her sisters, especially 'Rath' were bigger and generally a bit higher on the food chain if she didn't use her magic to even the odds. "But I'm not ready!" Tyr exclaimed wide-eyed. "There's so much to see and do!" She tilted her head, raising her arms in a way that made her look a little antsy - she had a similar begging 'stance' in her dragon form.
The remark about more belly showing had Pyrath looking down at herself. Splaying her hand against her naked abdomen, she trailed fingers up her bare arms, back down and on her thighs. Tugging at the odd fabric of her stockings and belted waist. A shrug of unconcern as her attention went to Tyr’s clothing. She did not understand the need for clothing. It seemed a hindrance, were scales not good enough… Poking her own belly again she remarked, “I love my beautiful scales… Do humans not like their scales… skin?”She corrected herself. At the mention of prettier, Pyrath suddenly wanted to see her reflection. Pyrath was not bothered by Tyr’s closeness, if anything it was a comfort. As kits the four of them had nested together, all tails and claws.
Being younger, time was a bit more noticeable for them. “You have already been here for awhile Tyr. You’re playing with fire. You may be dragon but there are many humans.” She narrowed her eyes at her sister. Tyr was always finding pets and humans were the most dangerous. She did not mention Tyr’s smallish nature for that of a dragon. “They will turn on you. It is only a matter of time.” When Tyr began to beg, Pyrath turned her head, “That won’t work on me.” There was the odd sensation of an action being denied as normally her tail would have swung back and forth in agitation.
Tyr tilted her head in a catlike fashion, watching her sister as she familiarized herself with her human form. She stepped back mostly so she could better see what Pyrath was up to, being curious about Pyrath's thought process as well. She knelt down and poked at Pyrath's belly as well before standing back up with a youthful hop. "Oh you mean because of the wearing cotton and animal hides?" She looked up and stroked her chin a bit. "Weeell I don't fully understand it, but humans like how clothes give them a more unique look, and also they're supposed to be embarrassed to not be wearing them except in certain situations... whatever that means. I think like when they get clean and stuff..."
Pyrath moved on quickly to the subject of leaving again, insisting that Tyr was 'playing with fire.' "But fire dragons play with fire all the time!" Tyr argued, knowing full well that wasn't what her sister meant as she resumed her antsy posture. "I'm really good with humans! They're only dangerous if you spook them. They're just kind of easily spooked creatures and if you look like a cute young one of them they're not afraid or dangerous at all." Pyrath insisted that Tyr's begging wouldn't work on her, which had Tyr hopping up and down. "But I'm not ready!" she repeated once more. "If I go home now I'll miss all the fun things going on! Who knows how much will change by the time I get to come back?!"
Pyrath understood embarrassment not that she would admit that she had been embarrassed before. Though humans were not on her radar to even possibly be embarrassed by. She would have to take her sister’s word that ‘clothing’ was more important to humans than their own skin even if this clothing seemed useless. It reminded her of the glittery silk she found in the ocean. It was pretty… so maybe there were more pretty clothes. She left it at that, ignoring her curiousness.
She stomped her feet twice showing her true dragon age, “But you’re not a fire dragon.” Pyrath said unnecessarily, indulging Tyr. Pyrath stopped, “You already spooked them, haven’t you?” She eyed her sister. Tyr knows they spook easy because she has already spooked them. Mental image of a crowd of humans slaying Tyr flashed in her mind. She saw Tyr as small and somewhat helpless, given her stature among the dragons.
At the hopping up and down, Pyrath pounced on Tyr. “Stop with the bouncing. Your being annoying." She is such a way that only sisters can. "Why is it so fun to you? Don’t you like being a dragon?”
"Meep!" Tyr hopped back an inch or two when Pyrath started to get annoyed. "Of course I'm not, I'm a sky dragon! We're like, the cleverest dragons, which makes us perfect for complicated stuff like learning about other species!" She reminded Pyrath. Whether the clever thing was true or not, it was commonly believed among sky dragons, given their natural inclination towards clever games and tricks.
Tyr was suddenly under scrutiny, told to stop her bouncing just after she was asked about spooking humans. She was being annoying? Well, yeah, she was the little sister she easily annoyed all of them, especially with her weirdness. She knew that. She just wanted Pyrath to indulge her weirdness! "Of course I like being a dragon! It's the best thing ever! And I only spooked them twice, and only once in this country! No one got hurt or anythiiiiiiing" she started to hop up and down again but caught herself and stopped, cringing in case she got yelled at again. "It's fun because humans are so unpredictable and curious - kind of like what you say about me!" she insisted. "I love being a dragon, but what good is being a dragon if I can't even appreciate what it means compared to other species...?"
“But humans?!” Pyrath said in exasperation. It would be her sister who became overly fond of the two legged, self destructive species. If she stretched her mind a bit, she could see how the humans may be fascinating for their short life span. In the blink of an eye they were gone from this world. What did one do in that time?
At the mention of her sisterly love, Pyrath almost cringed. If Tyr was good at one thing it was getting her way. She exhaled loudly, her lower lip sticking out making the air blow up her face and blowing the hair that framed her face. She did not honestly care if others were hurt, only if Tyr were hurt. At the thought of her sister being inflicted with pain, a slow seething began deep in her belly. “You don’t need to spend so much time with them to appreciate being a dragon…” Pyrath insisted, arms crossed. Head turned to the side, looking at nothing in particular as she continued, “If I insisted you come home?” She did not explain what insisted meant, not even she knew.
Pyrath's not so subtle question suggesting she was going to make Tyr come home wasn't missed by the original green-haired human-shaped dragon. Her childish face was rather expressive to people who understood human expressions, and she looked rather concerned at that moment. "But I like wandering around! I'm old enough to take care of myself, you know..." Most dragons her age were a lot more careful and a lot more reclusive when it came to other races. It probably wasn't the best argument. Still, she was a child in dragon years, and that did show. What also showed was that while she was good at getting her way, she was simultaneously the least combative, and while she was exceedingly hard-headed, her older sister was the alpha in their sibling group.
"But what's so bad about being out here? I'll have forever to sit around being boring. I want to learn things now. I want to experience things now." The fact that they were still young enough to notice the flow of time, even if to a lesser extent than the humans meant Tyr could be patient, but she saw no reason to be a lot of the time. She enjoyed listening to her whims, and had yet to learn a true reason not to as so many older dragons had. For all anyone they knew, knew, Tyr was probably the youngest, most inexperienced dragon alive at the moment. "You aren't going to make me, are you?" she asked, looking somewhere between worried and alarmed.
The mention of sitting around being boring had Pyrath shaking her head. Now was the time when dragons were the most social with each other. Playing games, socializing, learning about the world, learning from their elders. Older dragons were a lot more tolerant of kits and juveniles and their endless curiosity. By the time Tyr came back, everyone will probably have went their separate ways. A dragon’s curiosity often consumed them until it was satisfied. Who knows how much time will have passed when that happens with Tyr and her humans. She was old enough to get herself into more trouble than she could get herself out of that is what.
Pyrath was different in that while she was curious, her protective drive overrode that curiousness. Either because of that protectiveness or due to Tyr’s small stature it swayed her decision. She was the oldest, the alpha, and Tyr was the youngest. Maybe it was because of their odd sibling relationship that Tyr had a little more leeway in regards to Pyrath.
Glancing back at Tyr, she caught the younger dragon’s look. A loud, exasperated sigh she replied, “I won’t make you… at least not yet.”
The relief on Tyr's face was quite visible even as she pounced Pyrath yet again. This time she made sure the two wouldn't fall down, staying mindful even as she hopped up and down. Yeah, now was when dragons were at their most social. Except for their Brother. He'd already run out to find himself a lair and get away from the girls. Then again he'd always been grumpy and his three siblings were good at acting like he wasn't even as he growled at them.
"Thank you Pyrath!" She spoke this time in the dragon tongue. She let go, twirling around to her companion's other side with ease as she clasped her hands behind her back and bent forward slightly, despite being shorter. "You have a human form now! Does this mean you're going to stick around and give me some company while I play with the humans?" She did see interacting with humans as playing. She saw them as more intelligent than most dragons, but she also saw herself as superior, so it was like interacting with a talking cat. Even if she was the one who acted more like a cat half the time.
"That would be soooo much fun! I can show you all the fun foods and the good places to hunt if you don't want to try human food, and if we find any of my human friends they'll be sooooo surprised! I bet they'll confuse us for each other for a moment!" she paused and looked thoughtful, glancing up at the sky as she stood up straighter. A finger shot up to her lip. "Then again they're better than me at telling each other apart visually. Maybe because they can't smell or hear as well..."
Pyrath gripped Tyr as she pounced on her yet again. Thankfully Tyr kept in mind to keep balance and they did not fall. The dragon tongue put her at ease, more so than anything else. As if speaking their native language helped ease what worry she was feeling and the uncomfortable itch of her new form.
She stood straighter, her decision made. If she were going to walk in a two legged form she would own it. “It means I’ll be around to make sure you stay out of trouble while playing with your pets.” She replied in dragon. Nothing would make her trust the very destructive, easily spooked species. Even if she thought herself superior, they outnumbered dragons hundreds to one.
Human friends??? Of course… her little sister made friends with everything. She bet she would not like these friends of Tyr’s. Since she would be around now, her mind could be somewhat as ease. She wasn’t sure if being mistaken for Tyr would be a good thing. What if a human tried to touch her? She would bite them she thought decidedly. Shrugging off her current thought she focused on one of the few things important to a dragon.
