Eri would be more of a handful when she was bigger, although Kade didn’t consider her much of a handful now. At least not compared to other kids. He’d known a few guildmates who had children and they were extremely difficult to handle. Not always, but enough that Kade didn’t think he would have had the patience to raise those children on his own, as was the case with their parenting. He wondered how Kotone had been as a baby, and how he had been as a baby. “You’re not stupid. I’m just… privy to a more objective viewpoint about your life. Not totally objective, but more so than actually being you,” he told her casually. After all, it was impossible not to be biased about your own life. “You’re very intelligent though, just so you remember.” He realized she wasn’t being completely serious, or at least not truly harping on her intelligence, but Kade was rarely one to avoid a compliment toward his wife.
Kotone commented that Kade was good for her, and that people like her got stuck on certain things. She said that she just needed balance, and gave Kade a small kiss on the cheek. He smiled at her. “That’s the right idea. You just need a bit of a jump start. I can get in my own way sometimes too, as I’m sure you know,” he said with a sigh, though he was still smiling. Kade, despite being so laid back about most things, could definitely fixate on things for far too long if they pressed the right buttons.

Kotone grinned a convincing 'big-headed' grin. It was fake, but she certainly could be convincing when she wanted. "Of course I'm intelligent. I know when to take a chance getting close to someone," she reminded him. She raised her arm enough to hold up a finger for each point. "Plus I managed to learn how to live a completely different life from the one I was raised in, even if it took time. And now..." she held up a third finger before letting her know-it-all grin fade into a more natural one. "I'm getting used to taking care of a guild master and his daughter."
"Which I must say is a lot less stressful than saving people. Usually. On the nights I'm allowed to get sleep." Okay, that was most nights. Eri wasn't a bad child, but she still woke up hungry and cranky decently often. It wasn't like she could help it. Early on she'd literally nearly fallen asleep standing next to Kade at a guild meeting. At least she no longer looked like she was going to keel over in tiredness some mornings.
Kotone could play conceited, but Kade didn’t think it was genuine. It was different in the past, but he felt it came from a place of defensiveness back then. Now it was just teasing. “And now… I’m getting used to taking care of a guild master and his daughter.”
Kade snorted at that, “Oh, I’m sure. Guild masters and their children are so helpless. That would be your only motivation, of course,” he teased. He didn’t mind her giving him a hard time, although he had to counter just as much. She commented that it was less stressful, when she was allowed to sleep. “I think they say sleep is for the weak. So… Eri is probably just trying to keep us from getting soft. Prepared at a moment’s notice for action,” he smirked. Tired or not, it was easy for Kade to joke and look on the bright side of things. He certainly wasn’t as jovial as his friend Amie, but he could still find the humor in this.
“And I mean, since you’ve taken it upon yourself to care for the poor guild master and his daughter, its only expected that you never get proper rest,” he added casually. Playfully thoughtful.

"Well, you know, at least it's rewarding so it's worth it." Kotone shrugged and gave Kade a grin. It was a funny thought - Eri keeping them from getting soft. If anything Eri and Kade *were* her soft spots. Could she really be keeping her on her toes? Heh. Maybe she'd think about that more when she was bored. For now, she couldn't have Kade teasing her for going into her own little world.
"I manage to sneak in a bit of rest in between. You just don't catch it because you're busy lounging around drawing doodles on your paperwork," Kotone stuck her tongue out at Kade playfully, carefully handing Eri over to him. Her arms weren't getting tired, but she didn't mind splitting up the kid time, considering she was probably about half his.
"Or maybe be cause you're busy sleeping too. I dunno. Guild Masters are so lazy." She couldn't keep a straight face. Kotone chuckled to herself and brushed some hair behind her ear. "Okay that's not true. Half the time I feel like you're working harder than me lately."
Kotone had teased about taking care of Kade and Eri, and Kade teased her back. Now Kotone pointed out the worthwhileness of this responsibility. Kade couldn’t think of anything more worthwhile than taking care of one’s family. It had always been of the utmost importance to Kade, from his childhood, to his guild life, to his life now with his wife and daughter. He wouldn’t want to be doing anything else than what he got to do now.
Kade took his guild position very seriously, so Kotone claimed he drew on his paperwork when he was supposed to be working. “Well of course. Paperwork isn’t so much for getting done as it is for messing around while looking busy.” Kade was happy to give his wife a bit of sincere education on that topic.
When Kotone handed Eri over to Kade, he cradled the little girl in his arms, kissing the top of her head gently as they went along. Kotone continued her comments on the laziness of Guild Masters and Kade chuckled a bit at being told they were so lazy. It was fair to say it looked like they were lazy sometimes. It wasn’t a straightforward job with entirely measureable progress and success. Some jobs were best if you never had to think about or see what they were doing. Kotone relented from her teasing and admitted she thought sometimes that Kade worked harder than her. “I don’t know, the work is not necessarily comparable from one to the other. Both very important though, of course. And I’ve always loved how driven and hardworking you are. Eri and I, and Lamia Scale, are lucky to have you around,” he praised lightly. Kotone was special, and even the people she didn’t get along with likely benefited from spending time with her.

"Yeah well, I'm luckier. You guys give me something to focus on and care about and stuff. Heh. You remember a few years ago. I was running around causing more trouble than I solved. I don't think I'd have been that great for Lamia Scale or you guys if we'd tried to date when we first met." Kotone shrugged to herself, watching Kade and Eri out of the corner of her eye. She could just imagine trying to be a guild leader's wife or a mom while also having convinced herself she was way more important and strong than she was. "You know, if you want me to, I'll help you shuffle paperwork to the other side of the desk so you look busier," she chuckled. She hated paperwork, but hey it might get Kade home a bit earlier one day, right? "Eri will help too. She'll handle any paperwork you need slobbered on and torn. Maybe a suggestion for one of our less friendly members, hm?"
Kotone claimed to be luckier than Kade, who just smiled, not feeling the need to get into that topping of positivity, striving to be the most grateful. She basically said it was good they hadn’t started dating as soon as he met her. His first encounter with her was when she helped Ren bring him a delivery of fruit. She had mellowed considerably by the time he talked to her one-on-one, and a bit more still before he asked her out. Although it really hadn’t been that long of a gap in time.
“Well, it wasn’t that long after we met that we dated, you know.”
Kotone had always been good at her core, but it was true she kept that behind layers of resentment filled grime and rashness. Kade made a face at Kotone as if to say “oh how clever you are,” when she said she could help shuffle paperwork around, “I think I can manage that. I probably don’t need an assistant to help me not do work extra efficiently.” He did chuckle when she talked about Eri helping too, “Or she could be posted at a sentry. Anyone coming to give me more work will be unable to pass her cuteness.”
