"As long as someone has the power to do something, no matter how big or small, they should do it." Kotone shook her head, disagreeing with Zanza's last statement despite wishing she could agree. "People with power need to use it, hopefully for the better. Otherwise... what's the point? You're no better than the people who you should be stopping."
It was a bit harsh, but in reality that had long been how Kotone saw things. An old friend of hers had once tried to help Shadow Heart because he saw them as the less evil of the two factions trying to control Fiore a few years back. Kotone had called him a coward then too. Of course, they hadn't gotten along either. She had a strange history of people she hated for awhile and people she got along with famously... it all depended on how she felt and how they acted with her, she supposed.
"Regardless, knowing there are people like you I need to show up is a good motivator. I'll just need to find ways to get some live practice in so I don't forget how to fight things that aren't practice dummies in the guild training grounds..." Kotone was being competitive, but her smile was more friendly. She had learned she didn't need to hate her rivals to gain the motivation to beat them to a pulp. No, it could be for fun too.

“I see your point. To stand back and watch as innocents die as mankind fight among themselves is wrong, but we cannot baby them either. If they become too reliant on the slayers to save them they’ll never progress truly. I am a firm believer that protecting somebody involves allowing them to grow stronger, secretly protecting them from things they aren’t ready for, including myself if necessary.”
He smiled, hearing Kotone speak of him being somebody for her to show up and defeat, likening him to a practice dummy that hits back when attacked. “You say that, but it’s really your way of saying you appreciate my help in your training today and that you know I’d have beaten you if I’d have been fighting properly!” He teased well naturedly, flashing a mock cocky grin at Kotone which slowly melted into a friendly smile.
“Regardless, you know where to find me if you need a sparring partner randomly. I think besides Kade I’ll be one of the only ones to give you a true workout. Plus you’ll probably be the first person I test my new magic on when it’s nearly complete. I know you’re tough enough to take it. Unless you’re scared that is?” He shot with a mocking grin, finishing up his snowcone and throwing the cup into a nearby trash can.

"Maybe that's what I'm saying," Kotone shrugged, giving Zanza a coy grin. She looked completely relaxed - a far cry from the girl who once essentially pushed strangers away by being a jerk. "Or maybe I'd have fought even harder if it were a real fight and I didn't mind accidentally killing you." She finished her own cone, letting her wind magic take it to the trash before following Zanza. "For the record, I don't tend to like killing my guild mates, or anyone else for that matter."
There was a reason her new sword was as fancy as it was - she'd had it commissioned to create a blade that could be used non-lethally as well. It'd still hurt like heck, and could probably kill if she bashed people just right, but it wasn't going to slice off any extremities unless she changed it's configuration around. "For the record, I can't get myself to fight at full strength against Kade. It's one of those things that comes with going soft and making a normal life for yourself I guess. That makes you my best bet unless some ghost from the past wanders back into my life."
Zanza's new magic caused Kotone to chuckle. "Well, whatever weird new magic you have, I'm sure I will still pummel you. A Wizard Saint has her pride to power her through a tough fight, you know."

Zanza let a confident grin plaster itself on his face as he glared mockingly at Kotone, making an exaggerated roll of his eyes very prominent. Kotone was very good at playing the teasing game it seemed, a rival that could push him to his greatest limits. He smirked at the woman, exposing his teeth slightly and tapping his nose twice with his index finger.
“You make a compelling argument, Mrs. Lazarus…” He trailed off with a grin, swiping his trident from its resting place in the floor next to him and gripping it like a walking stick before turning to face Kotone. “…But I’d like to think you aren’t ready to face my newest magic so soon, wizard saint or not.” He finished with a grin, turning around to survey their surroundings before shrugging.
He wasn’t exactly sure what to do now, he only knew that it wasn’t so early anymore and that it was nearly that time where guild members started to return from jobs if they’d taken one in the morning. THIS in turn meant that if he was going to finish his magic, he wouldn’t be welcome for a few days until he managed to get it under control.
“It’s getting sort of late now. Maybe it’s time for you to return or something? Either way could you let Mr. Lazarus know I won’t be around for a while in case he asks for me or something? My new magic is pretty destructive and I’d rather not damage the guild hall getting it under control...” Zanza trailed off, ruffling the back of his head in embarrassment as he chuckled lightly, glad he’d had the foresight to warn somebody so they didn’t think he was dead or something like that.
“..Oh and you’d better push yourself enough to keep up with me when I get back. Cuz’ when I get back I’ll outrank you in terms of raw power, ya hear me?”

Kotone's grin widened to one Zanza hadn't seen yet - she did it lest often, but it denoted a level of excitement higher than she'd felt before. Her dragon fangs were obvious for all to see, and her eyes flashed an almost dangerous hue, filled with raw arcane power. "We'll see about that," Kotone told Zanza in a voice that very much betrayed her doubt in him being more powerful.
"Don't call me Mrs. Lazarus though. It sounds weird even after the last couple of years. Kotone's fine." She shrugged, pulling at the strap her sword's scabbard was attached to. He was right. She did want very badly to get back to Eri. Whether she could really be classified as clingy or not (she could), she was still new to her current home situation, and she hated to be gone for long once she was done with her training. "At any rate, you're right. I should get back and check on Eri and Kade." She stuffed her hands in her hoodie pockets, turning around before turning partway back to him. "Good luck, Devil Slayer. Dragons and their slayers are a stubborn breed. I won't go down without a fight."
