"But I have plenty! What do you mean you can't take gold pieces?" The fifteen year old pigtailed girl in red robes and a breastplate demanded. She gripped the mug of soda she still had left. She really should have checked this sort of thing. She'd thought gold was universally valuable!
"Well, it's just... I don't know how to make change for gold?" the waitress tried to explain, bowing apologetically. "I'm sorry, Miss, but you're going to have to find another way to pay. Otherwise we'll have to call the Templars..." She obviously didn't want to, but the people of Fiore generally had a pretty tough policy against being taken advantage of after the events with Shadow Heart. Not that the pigtailed girl knew about it.
The girl facedesked dramatically. It actually sounded like it probably hurt. It was confirmed when she let out a small "ow..." before groaning. "But it's all I have! I just got here. You can even take it and keep it." She adjusted so that she could see the waitress's response, a red mark on her forehead after the head banging stunt.
The waitress shook her head. "I'm sorry, we have a strict jewels only policy. We see a lot of immigrants lately and that's what my manager told me."
"But gold is worth something!" she tried again. "How can you get in trouble if I give you more than it's worth?"
The real problem seemed to be that the waitress wasn't one for thinking outside the box, and her only concern was not getting in trouble for going by the book completely."I'm sorry... I can't. I'll um... I'll go get the manager and see what she says."
The girl promptly took her leave, and the pigtailed girl just sighed, not even raising her head. She didn't want to start her time in Fiore as a criminal. Was she really going to get in trouble for not having the proper currency?! "Stupid Fiore..."

Gallows Town, a rather good place to be hiding. There were plenty of people who needed healing, and were willing to pay for it. So he was able to take care of himself and live somewhat comfortably. He was eating at the Hang Man for lunch, since he'd just spent a lot of magic fixing up what otherwise would have been a fatal wound. People needed to stop dragging big heavy things up stairs...
That's when he heard the commotion. Immigrants with the wrong currency weren't all that uncommon. And he thought about letting it sort itself out. But she was talking rather loudly about paying in gold coins. And that... that was a big problem. Gallows town wasn't the nicest of places. It wasn't the worst, but it wasn't the best either. Not to mention she looked small and easy to take advantage of. Of course, he'd seen a lot and knew better than to go by just looks. But others would still cause trouble.
Sighing he dug out his wallet, which was attached to his belt via a metal chain. He'd have enough for the inn still if he helped her... good. Then he pushed back his chair and walked away from his half eaten plate. He walked right up to the counter as the waitress was walking away. "Lady, wait."
"She's with me," He said before giving Pyrra a 'work with me' glance. Turning back to the waitress he offered her a smile. "So go ahead and give me her tab and I'll pay it. There's really no need to go to the trouble of fetching the manager."

The girl's eyes widened when a random boy about her age told the girl she was with him. She got a look she'd been given more than once by her brother Tobias when the two of them were trying to stay out of trouble with their mother or one of their caretakers. Her face lit up though. "Yeah, I'm with him!" she lied, despite not knowing why they had to actually be together. "I didn't realize you were even here yet you silly goose," she got up and put an arm around him, ruffling his hair with her free hand.
The waitress paused, turning to look at the pair. Her grin widened - suddenly her job was so much easier! "Of course, sir," she went over to the girl's old table and placed the ticket there. "I'll be back to take it in a moment." She quickly flitted over to a nearly forgotten customer's table.
"Thanks for that," the girl sighed, not removing her arm from his neck for a moment. Appearances were important after all! "I'm Pyrrha. Pyrrha Drakos." She reached over and took his drink without thinking, taking a sip as if it were hers. She meeped when she realized what she'd done, instantly trying to spit out the imaginary saliva she'd obtained from the straw. At least she thought to remove her arm when she started doing so.
When he got the waitress's attention he knew his plan would work. But that's when the girl wrapped herself around him and ruffled his hair. He maintained the smile but his eyebrow twitched. She didn't have to do anything except agree that she was with him. But she went so far and was already being annoying. "Thank you."
That's when she grabbed his drink and drank from it. And then started acting weird. He closed his eyes and took a few deep breaths to calm down. Did she have to go after his drink after he helped her? That was so backwards! Scratching his head he sighed slightly. It was never dull, was it?
"I'm Hawke," He replied as he tightened one of his gloves. He'd left his jacket draped over the back of a chair. His black clothes covered most of his body. Then he took on a sarcastic tone as he grabbed his drink. "And you've met my drink. So I think that covers introductions."

"Ha ha very funny." Pyrrha glared as she wiped her mouth on her sleeve. "The drink was an accident alright? I haven't really had carbonated drinks before and I wanted more." Her island home had a lot of fruit juice, and a lot of rum that she had never partaken in. About that time, Bloo woke up from his spot under the table, stretching, yawning, and then flapping over to Pyrrha. "Oh! And this is Bloo. Bloo, get back under the table! You do count as a pet you know!" she started shoving the small crystalline drake under the table. He was about the size of a cat, and almost as stubborn, so it took her a few tries. He growled a protest, believing he was the equal of a human, but eventually acquiesced. "Food places are for people. We went over this at home!"
Pyrrha sighed, shaking her head and wiping the small beads of sweat off of her forehead from struggling with the now under-the-table drake. "Anyway," she glanced back at him, grinning once more. "Why help a random girl you don't know? Isn't that dangerous? You never really know what kind of person someone is." She frowned at him slightly. "And for the record, in case you're hoping for that kind of payment I'm not that kind of girl!" A couple of heads tilted to look at the pair. She glanced around. Apparently she'd been louder than she'd thought. "Er, and in case you're not, thanks."
So what she was really saying was that she was selfish. Fantastic! ...Apparently he was sarcastic even to himself. No one was safe! Shaking that thought from his head he watched as she wrestled with the strange cat sized lizard. What even was it? And what was with tthatt name?! Only a little girl would name it something like Bloo.
"I-I'm not that kind of guy!" He blurted out equally as loud before taking on a more annoyed look. Feeling the eyes on him he coughed and took a long sip from his drink. Once he'd had a moment he continued with a small shrug. "I helped because you were digging yourself quite the pit to fall in. And while I like healing people, I don't like seeing them get hurt over stupid mistakes."
"Gold isn't used as a currency here but it's still valuable," He said shaking his head slowly. "It's used in a lot of the more modern things that Fiore's been working on lately. So people make a lot of money for selling it on the black markets and stuff. By waving around like you were you're puting yourself in needless danger."

While Hawke sipped on his drink, Pyrrha couldn't help but act on her little sister instincts that kicked in. She was much more quiet this time. "Eiew. I drank out of that you know. Aren't new straws free in this country? Yech. Drinking out of someone else's straw is like accidentally kissing a stranger." she clawed at her tongue again as if to remove the taint of Hawke from it after saying so. "And you did it on purpose. Are you sure you weren't looking for a kiss from a pretty young lady?!"
She stopped though, when he started to explain more things. "I wasn't digging any pits! I was offering to let the woman keep-" the lady took the jewels off of the table and flitted away as if she hadn't heard a thing. Who was that paranoid about gold coins?! Just what had Fiore been through that they didn't trust something obviously more valuable than paper?! The brunette blinked as the lady flitted off, before resuming. "I was offering to let her keep way more than she needed, I'm sure!" No one in her country fought over paper unless it was some sort of treaty.
"Besides, I can take care of myself, at least when it comes to danger. Crazy waitresses... maybe not. I mean, maybe, but since I might be here a while I might as well not be on the country's wanted list over some stupid misunderstanding." She sighed, blowing upward with her lower lip and causing her bangs to fly up and back down.
"Sure you can," He sounded sarcastic when he said that, but he had a feeling he was looking at someone who knew how to fight. He grabbed his half eaten food and started slowly back in on it. It was a strange day, one he wasn't ready for. He'd expected to just pay and leave. But instead she'd wanted to talk more. Oh well... he supposed the company wasn't that bad. Though... there was something that needed addressing first.
"You can't pull that on me," He grinned and took his time taking another sip from his drink. He'd had an older sister, so he kind of knew how this song and dance went. And he knew how to push buttons back. "This was my cup first. And YOU'RE the one that drank from MY cup. By that logic you're the one looking for a kiss from a handsome young man."

"Maybe... if I find one," Pyrrha crossed her arms and looked away from him as if she were looking for someone else. The truth was that it couldn't be further from the truth, and Pyrrha had the most innocent ideals for someone she might date ever, for someone who seemed so in the know about what boys wanted from her. Still, lying for the benefit of messing with this guy was still kind of fun. "I just thought the drink was mine for a moment, okay? I just sailed in from a long ways away and then had to deal with the difficult locals!" A few more people turned their heads. "... who are lovely, by the way..." she waggled her fingers at them in a cutesy wave.
"Anyway!" she returned to looking at him so that she wouldn't have to look at the other people who were curious about the foreign girl eating lunch in was was essentially a set of armored robes. "I already said thank you for your help. So now I'm going to take my leave. Goodbye, random pervert boy." She stood up, picking up Bloo in he process. He climbed to her shoulder and stretched his wings as she walked through the door.
What she didn't immediately notice were the couple of desperate looking people who stood up shortly after her, making a show of leaving as if they too were done with their lunch. It might have been more believable if they had even had food sat in front of them by that time.
"Yeah, I know. The nerve of some boys, huh, Bloo?" she patted the crystal drake's head. "First they get all helpful then they want a nice girl like me to be extra nice to them in return. Momma did warn us about those sorts of people." The drake made a small growl of agreement. He wasn't prone to trusting anyone who approached his human charge.
"..." He listened, but when she left he didn't say anything. He had to admit... she'd been fun to talk to. It was kinda like being back home for a minute there. Resisting both the urge to sigh and he urge to watch her go he sat back down. He'd only been about to take a bite when he saw the two suspicious figures get up and walk out. He looked back down on at his food. Then he sighed in frustration. Why couldn't he be a jerk like everyone else!?
He stood up and left a tip before heading out the door. After looking for a moment he spotted the two men stalking after her, so he followed them. He wasn't about to let the girl who took his drink just get robbed like this. But he was slow and they were desperate. So by the time he'd gotten anywhere near them they were already practically on top of her.
"Hey, little lady," One of them said coming up with a friendly smile. He waved at her as his friend seemed to stay off to the side. So that's how it was... One was the conman and the other was the watchman. This way the Templars wouldn't figure it out... So these two were used to such activities... "Me and a friend could use a hand if you can spare a few minutes. A friend of ours is stuck and only a small person could fit through the space to help him."

'Hey little lady.' That was how the men chose to get Pyrrha's attention. "... I'm not that little..." Pyrrha complained under her breath as she spun around, a pleasant expression on her face. "Well if you need a little help I'm the right girl for the job," she bragged, jabbing a thumb into her chest plate. "Hey wait, weren't you in the diner earlier?" she asked in a slightly accusing tone. It had taken until she'd turned around properly to see them. "And if you need help why's that guy looking around like there's going to be trouble?"
"I..." The man seemed stumped at the questions. "I'm not quite sure what you mean. We just got word of our friend as you left and I knew you were the right size and looked brave." Pyrrha's hands had fallen to her hips as she watched him try and recover. He didn't even sound that believable. Apparently they mostly targeted gullible marks and had confused her for one somehow.
"I get it. You want to con me, don't you?" she accused him. "You want to take me somewhere more private so you can take my money. I bet you heard me talking about the gold earlier too." Pyrrha had always been great with puzzles. This was like a real life puzzle, with the question being 'why would they want something to do with her?' A grin actually appeared on her lips, her drake friend starting to growl as he, too, realized the pair were up to no good. "Ha! I knew the gold was worth something here! Everyone uses gold even if it's not their country's currency~" She was actually celebrating; she didn't look that worried, for some reason.
"What are you...?" The man was about to ask, but that's when Hawke finally stepped in. Though he stepped in as it looked like Pyrrha was celebrating. That was fantastic... She was about to get robbed and was seemingly happy about it. She really was something else. He would say stupid... but she'd caught onto their plan with relatively little trouble. So she wasn't stupid. Just... something.
"Look, before things get out of hand you two should just leave the girl alone," He said, though it sounded half hearted. He really wasn't into threatening people. Or hurting them. He wasn't a pacifist, he knew better than that. But he was pretty close... "It's really not worth your time or hers. Get a job or something..."
"You shut your face!" The watchman said angrily. He stormed up and grabbed Hawke by the front of his shirt and lifted the shorter man up slightly. His face was twisted into an angry scowl. "Our friend really is in trouble and we don't need your lip slowin' us down. Besides, we ain't done nothin' to her 'cept ask her for help. Where's the crime there pal?"
"You should put him down, it doesn't make us look any better," The man who originally approached her said as he turned back and smiled at Pyrrha. If they lied hard enough it'd work. "My friend here is just worried about our stuck friend."

"Uh, huh," Pyrrha's triumphant grin never faltered, even after being surprised by the dumb boy stepping out in her way. She'd been right! Who knew how much Fiore currency she could get with this if they wanted it that bad. She'd only proven to have one piece at the store. "Uh, look I should really ask you to put the dumb boy down," she reiterated. She hadn't expected him to come to her rescue. She didn't think he needed to, though. Especially not if he was going to do this bad of a job... "And you might as well give up. My brothers used to try and trick me all the time, and they at least put some fake worry into it."
She reached her right hand behind her back, pulling out a rapidly assembling glaive that rested on her shoulder by the time she finished her movement. "I don't know what it is about boys in this country trying to take advantage of a cute girl like me, but I think it's high time I showed you all why judging someone by their looks is a bad idea." Bloo had already hopped off her shoulder in anticipation of the coming fight. "Noooow... you should probably leave before this gets out of hand. I've been in a mood since I got off that week long boat ride."
"I'm not dumb," Hawke replied with a huff. Though he started getting shaken, and he had to work to keep his head straight. The calm man and the angry man looked at each other and nodded. Though, Hawke didn't seem to care. He COULD be free if he wanted to. But he wasn't one to show off or hurt others. Besides, it seemed like Pyrrha wanted to anyway. "You're the dumb one for waving gold around in front of greedy slobs who don't know how to live life in the first place. Maybe miss 'I can take care of myself' should have thought that one through!"
"Alright, Girly," The calmer man said as the angry man put Hawke into a headlock and held both Hawke's arms behind his back. The calm man then pulled out a knife and held the tip against Hawke's head. "If you value his life you'll putt away that toy and just give us the gold. All of it."
"Yeah, and don't think we won't kill him," the angry man shouted. It was only then when Hawke showed any signs of caring. And it was only because shouting in his ear hurt. He winced and sighed. "We've killed people before!"
"Oh no... I'm being held hostage," Hawke drawled on in a deadpan voice sarcastically. He made no move to get free and just looked kinda sad by tthe events unfolding. "Whatever will I do when they kill the only thing between them and that stupid foreign girl."
"Y-you know... your life is on the line kid," The calm one seemed to lose his composure a bit. "You should be more scared. You might die as it is."
"If you're going to beat them up air brains, now's a good time," Hawke turned his attention back to Pyrrha. "Cause... they're being awfully nice and waiting. Like the obvious murders they are."
Hawke just couldn't resist telling Pyrrha off for calling him dumb. "You're the one that got caught, Goldilocks!" she complained back. "All you've done is make everything harder." She stopped and looked at the two thugs who looked rather confused at their banter. "Well... not that much harder... but still!"
"Alright, Girly," the thugs changed strategies, obviously deciding that neither of them were going to take the coward's way out. They went so far as to tell her to put her 'toy' away and give them the gold.
"But see.. I don't even know the guy. Last I remember he was propositioning me in exchange for help with lunch," she shrugged. "I mean, if I save him he's probably going to decide he helped somehow and expect more than a date... he's kinda dumb like that. Are you sure you don't have any better hostages sitting around?" she tilted her body as if to look around them for one hiding behind their backs.
Hawke started hurrying her, but she just stood there for a moment. "No? nothing better?" she sighed. "Laaaame I really wanted an excuse to actually get some exercise today." Her body language deflated dramatically. She was actually disappointed.
"Hey! You take us seriously! I'll do it! I don't want to, but we need the gold as much as he needs his life!"
Pyrrah just rolled her eyes. Her spear had fallen to the side along with her arms when she'd deflated, but with greatly honed reflexes she brought herself into a crouched fighting position, her bored face suddenly holding a fire in it that was her unmistakably ready to fight. "If you want the gold, I have it, not him, stupid. Hurting him only gets rid of your hostage."
The pair paused and looked at each other. Did she really not care this much? If so... they weren't really going to get anywhere. "Get her," he told the calm one. He pulled out his own knife, approaching the girl with a determined street fighting pose.
There was a flash of light near Pyrrha's feet and the next thing either thug knew was that Mr. Calm was suddenly about twenty feet on the other side of Mr. Angry. "Come on. Stop playing dumb, dummy," she addressed Hawke in an annoyed tone. "Just kick him where it hurts he's wide open."
